Easter Sunday may have started with snow and freezing temperatures but by the seaside, our elite junior squad certainly were not feeling the cold. The Essex Open Championship was held at Clacton-on-Sea sports centre and our team really made the most of the day.
The day kicked off with the Kata categories, arranged by age and kyu [belt] and we got off to the best start possible when Navin and Kieran put on a repeat of their internationals performance and both got through to the final. This time, Kieran got the better of Navin to take Gold, with Navin in a very close Silver place. These boys are 10 and 12 years old respectively and to have two boys doing so incredibly well at this level is a testament to them, the club, coaches and the parents

The girls went in next in the 15 and under category where the level was incredibly high. The judges couldn't seperate Hunisha and Nuri and joint Bronze was their prize.

Meanwhile both Hanako and Bethany worked very hard on their kata with Bethany finishing just 0.1 point out of the medals in 4th place in her category. This was Hanako's first attempt at competing at this level and despite some expected nerves, performed incredibly well, this experience will be invaluable to her and showed huge potential for the future.

Hunisha then went straight into the next category of 15 and over and again took Bronze against equally tough opposition.

This was the start of a flurry of kata activity with Hunisha dashing from mat to mat. No sooner had she finished her 2 individual performances than she was back on for the mixed junior team event. This is the first tournament our junior team had competed in, having only trained for this for a week. Team Kata entails 3 competitors in a 'synchronised' kata - so not only do they have to be move perfect as individuals, but they have to be perfectly in time with each other. Navin, Nuri and Hunisha certainly managed to master timing and took the Silver medal. Superb at anytime, extra special for a first effort.

Flushed with that success and some quick reorganizing and a mixed senior team was entered, this time with Nuri, Hunisha and Jordan, an elite cadet [16 - 18 yrs old] student of Sensei Marks - these 3 had not done this together before but they performed like experienced professionals and were rewarded with a Bronze place. We were not sure this day could get much better - but it still had more to offer!

The kumite categories were hard fought and there was a lot of experience on display from the youngest to the oldest competitors. Nuri, Navin, Kieran, Hanako and Stephania all worked very hard and fought well but it was the turn of one of our less experienced competitors, Bethany, to take centre stage. She comprehensively won her round and went through to the final, taking Gold with an incredible 8-0 scoreline and rounding off the day in fine style for Ashin-do Kai.

The results are wonderful and as a club we want to congratulate all our competitors and thank them for their commitment and determination. What a fantastic day and great results for everyone!!  The same thanks should of course be extended to the parents for their input and help in these events.

Well Done Everyone!! We are very proud of all of you.

The kids would also like to say a big thank you to Sensei Ricky, Sensei Anthony and Sensei Mark [as well as his older students, Gareth, Jordan and Zan who not only competed successfully in their own right, but were around to support and cheer on our juniors] for their efforts at this event and to all the coaches for their help during training. This just shows what can be achieved when you focus as individuals and pull together as a team.
